About Huricane-Computing.net

What started out as something to do out of boredom has become one of the most enjoyable things I have ever done. This particular website started as a little set of pages on my university-provided webspace. It was solid green and framed ( terrible, I know, but I started that long ago ), but quickly moved to css and divs and my own server where I could have more functionality. It is currently php driven and continually becoming more advanced and simplistic. I will not be making this site database driven, but I do have a CMS work-in-progress that is based on MySQL and php.

Why is Huricane mispelled?

I don't exactly remember where hurricane came from, but it is mispelled to fit in it the old DOS file naming convention of eight characters followed by a three character extension. So far it has proved very useful as a unique identifier.

About Me

My name is Chris Smith. I've been sort of a "jack-of-all-trades" when it comes to computers and electronics for over 27 years now. I started with systems maintenance and upgrades; keeping my, my family's, and friends' systems up and running. I taught my self most of the programming languages that I use on a regular basis and have learned a few extra ones through my computer science courses at NC State University.

In 2004, I started working with the IT department in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS IT) at North Carolina State University as a Network Computing Technician. For the next four years I had the opportunity to work on serveral projects that further broadened my skillset in development and systems management. I took on many projects from reverse engineering software packages to setting up server systems (DNS, web, database, etc.).

In 2008, I was given the opportunity to take a full-time position with CHASS IT as an Applications and Web developer, which has allowed me to pursue some of my projects in a more professional setting and actually see them be used and appreciated by others.
